Over the summer of 2019, I was a paid research intern at Olin College’s LAIR (Laboratory for Adaptation, Inclusion, and Robotics) under Professor Jeff Dusek. My primary research involved exploring how to make a wearable navigation device for visually impaired swimmers. My team interviewed three blind or visually impaired swimmers and investigated the suitability of several different kinds of microcontrollers, including RasPi, Arduino, Estimote beacons, and Adafruit’s Feathers, before selecting XBee3’s for the prototype. As well as learning how these devices worked, I also built and iterated on prototypes (such as the early, semi-waterproof prototype above) and gathered data on the reliability of those prototypes.
