Soundscaping a Story

Spring 2019

As a final project for an Olin College course called Signals and Systems, I created a soundscape based on a story written for Olin’s annual Story Slam. The soundscape retells the story using only sound effects, and is not intended as a backdrop or soundtrack to a reading of the story. I mapped out the different sounds I associated with different beats in the story, such as car noises, machine shop noises, and the sounds of a lecture from Olin professor Brian Storey. I then recorded all the audio myself using a Zoom H5 Handy Recorder, and when necessary, manipulated them in MATLAB using signal processing math, such as convolution. I layered and compiled the sounds in Adobe Audition. Give it a listen below!
